How It Started/How It’s Going

We started off the season with a new flock of chicks and some veggie starts. All of them have grown so much in the last few weeks. So here is the progress update! Starting off with the garden; we bought some tomatoes, peppers, sugar snap peas, purple pole beans, squash, zucchini, and pumpkins, as wellContinue reading “How It Started/How It’s Going”

The Times They Are A Changin’

Now that the beautiful Indian summer has disappeared here in the Pacific Northwest, and things are a bit more dreary, it’s time for some things to change around this homestead! The garden is ready to be cleared of all the dead tomato plants and vines, and the huge poke weeds we let grow too bigContinue reading “The Times They Are A Changin’”

When Flocks Collide

The pecking, the squawking, the chasing around. It sounds gnarly to experience, but it has to be done. And so far, having a rooster has actually been a boon to the integrating adventure! I’ve tried to research the varying methods available online, and am taking key aspects from each method to artfully create one thatContinue reading “When Flocks Collide”

Backyard Economy

I absolutely love the homesteading life. I get to feel the satisfaction of harvesting the literal fruits of my labor,Continue reading “Backyard Economy”

Reaping What You Sow

It feels good when you begin to harvest the fruits of your labor. The whole family gathered around the bountiful crop, hands in the dirt eager to find… where is it? Ah, there it is… the first one. Oh yeah. Littles aren’t always very big on doing the labor part, but when it comes toContinue reading “Reaping What You Sow”

Happy Hen House

The time has come! Our once fluffy butt chicks have graduated into 3 pullets and a rooster ready to spring the brooder. So, yesterday we put them out in the coop for the first time. It’s been bittersweet for the humans, but the birds couldn’t be happier. They have room to run and scratch aroundContinue reading “Happy Hen House”

Cultivating The Dragon

We at the Artful Homesteader have embarked on a perilous and unconventional journey. One full of danger and suspense. Exciting and hopeful, yet unpredictable. This trek must be traveled with careful attention to detail, and precise measurement. This perilous mission is growing, propagating, and fruiting the prickly dragon fruit plant right here, in Northwest Washington.Continue reading “Cultivating The Dragon”

Modding The Quad Squad

If you’ve been following me the last few weeks then you know I’ve been working on a chicken coop for my four chicks. The coop is coming along nicely, and my girls are pretty happy mother cluckers living in the main room of the house (at least for another week). They are the stars ofContinue reading “Modding The Quad Squad”
